E-CommerceYou can open an Etsy shop with nothing to stock and nothing to ship 📦. Two models make it work: digital downloads and print-on-demand. Startup cost runs about $15 to $30 for most people, counting Etsy’s one-time setup fee and one sample order.
The catch is time. Sources put the first sale somewhere between one and three months out, and Etsy generally holds a new seller’s funds for about 14 days after each sale. So plan for a slow first quarter, not a fast first week. Which model fits you better: making files, or designing for products?
Digital downloads or print-on-demand: pick one first
Neither model costs you anything per unit until a customer pays 💡. They differ in what you make and what you risk.
Digital downloads. Planners, templates, printables and wall art. No unit cost, no shipping, instant delivery.
Print-on-demand (POD). Shirts, mugs and posters. A partner prints and ships every order, and you pay only when someone buys.
Money at risk, digital. Your time, plus the setup fee.
Money at risk, POD. One sample order. A Bella+Canvas tee on Printify’s free plan runs about $14 all-in to ship to yourself.
If cash is tight, I’d start with digital. Printable wall art is the easy entry, and it is also the most crowded category, so narrow beats broad every time. BizWhat’s piece on AI-assisted digital products for Etsy makes the same point and suggests checking what autocompletes in Etsy’s search bar before you build anything. Our $0 startup guide adds a warning: digital products take longer to find an audience than freelance work. This is exactly the kind of topic the BizWhat Membership digs into properly, with a dedicated ebook and real implementation details.
Income claims here are all over the place 📉. One 2026 guide puts month-one revenue at $0 to $50, another says $100 to $300, and one assumes you put in 10 to 15 hours a week. I plan for the low end. If you want physical products later, Printful’s Etsy integration page shows how the connection works.
What the math looks like after Etsy takes its cut
Etsy is free to browse and not free to sell on 💸. Here is what you pay:
Setup fee. A one-time, nonrefundable $15 for some new shops, per Etsy. Other guides report up to $29, so budget for the high end.
Listing fee. $0.20 per listing, charged again every four months or after each sale.
Transaction fee. 6.5% of the total, shipping included.
Payment processing. 3% + $0.25 per order for US sellers.
Offsite Ads. 15% of an ad-driven sale, or 12% once you pass $10,000 in trailing sales, when it becomes mandatory.
Etsy explains the setup fee in its seller handbook. Now run it on real numbers. Say a POD tee sells for $25 with shipping included. Fees come to about $2.83. Your landed cost from Printify is roughly $15, so you keep about $7.20, or 29%. If that sale came through an Offsite Ad, you pay another $3.75 and keep roughly $3.40 😬.
Digital looks better, with a catch. A $10 printable costs about $1.40 in fees, so you keep $8.60. An Offsite Ad sale drops that to $7.10. The flat $0.25 and $0.20 charges hit cheap items hardest, which is one reason I like bundles.
Then the wait. Etsy’s payment help page says new sellers generally get funds 14 days after a sale, and a bank detail change triggers a 5-day hold. Some sellers report longer reserves in the Etsy Community forums. Would you keep going if a $25 shirt netted $3? Decide your floor before you list.
The rules that can sink a shop with no inventory
Zero inventory does not mean zero responsibility ⚖️. Etsy’s Creativity Standards are the rulebook, and they matter more to you than to a candle maker.
You design it. POD is allowed when the artwork is yours. The June 10, 2025 update removed the wording that allowed templated designs.
Disclose your production partner. Etsy requires it on the relevant listings, and buyers can see it in your shop’s About section.
Disclose AI use. Etsy has required this since the standards began in 2024. BizWhat’s digital products piece warns that raw, unedited AI output performs worse and invites enforcement.
Keep your records. Save source files, dates and drafts. Marmalead advises this because it is your best evidence in an appeal.
Etsy’s production partner page spells out the disclosure rule. You may also see headlines saying Etsy banned print-on-demand. It didn’t. Growtsy checked the policy dates in August 2026 and found the Creativity Standards last changed on June 10, 2025, while the August 11 update covers animal fur.
The rules are clear, but enforcement is where I’d worry 😕. Marmalead reports POD sellers across Etsy Community forums describing traffic drops since mid-2024, with no single explanation. One jewelry seller with more than 54,000 sales posted about a shop suspension and said Etsy gave no detailed reason. Build your shop assuming you may have to prove every design is yours.
Your first two weeks
Here is a plan you can run without spending more than the setup fee and one sample 🚀:
Day 1. Type your niche into Etsy’s search bar. Write down what autocompletes and how many reviews the top listings have.
Days 2 to 3. Open the shop, verify your identity, pay the setup fee if it applies, and add your production partner if you sell POD.
Days 3 to 10. Publish your first listings. One 2026 guide suggests 10 to 30 in month one, and I think that’s about right.
Before you list POD. Order the sample. Photos are cheaper than refunds.
Before any price goes live. Run the fee math above and check that an Offsite Ad sale still leaves a profit.
Treat the first 30 days as testing, not earning. If nothing sells after four weeks, change one thing at a time: photos, title, or price. Do one thing today: type your niche into Etsy’s search bar and write down the top five listings’ review counts. It costs nothing, and it tells you whether the shop is worth opening.
